Floating Boats!!

This term for our Project based learning (PBL)  We are focusing on inovation. I know your probably wondering  what id inovation? Well inovation means inproving our lives with technology. So as a starter we had some mini challenges. I am going to be telling you about one of the 3 mini challenges. We made boats out of tin foil, tape, plastic, cups and straws. My group created a boat that had 5 cups underneath and it had a tin foil base and tin foil sides with a cup in the middle. Then we found out that we had to pur as many marbles in it without it sinking. My group got 28 and the highscore was 91 but today the record was broken by a mile they got 140 thats alot! Now the teachers said that we can choose one of the 3 to do again and build off our first idea to make it better. And this would be making a start to our inovation PBL. Sunny with a chance Cross Country!

On Thursday 2nd of May My school (St francis of assisi school) Walked to walter park to competet in the most hard running race I could think of. (Well maybe not for other people but it is for me) We had arrived at the park and it seemed bigger than it was last time. We walked over to where we were meant to sit. We had to take our shoes off if we were going to be aloud on the tarpolines. Me and my friends sat in a circle. We were so squished but we got used to it. It seemed like forever unitl our race. We were abit unhappy because evryone got to leave before we did our race. We decided we were going to do some stretches and get warmed up. My friends and I ended up just doing gymnastics. Finally it was time to do it everyone was nearly gone. Our teachers told us to go for a run before and do some stretching. The year 5 boys went first the year 5 girls then year 6 boys then us the year 6 girls. We skipped up to the start/finish line the teachers said take your marks and........GO everyone sprinted off where I just took it slowly. I remembered deep breathing don't just go huhuhuhu. I eneded up placing 8th I think. I was sooooooooo hot I forgot to pack my inhailer so I was a bit weezy. I got my water bottle and took nice deep breaths. I put my drink bottle on my face because it was metal and it was cold. I get very red when I do physical activity so I was as red as a tomato. After that we had some time to cool down and then we started walking back to school. It was very painful because we were tired and run down. But we had a great time and we all tryed our best. How did your cross country go if you do it.

PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and decided to do games for the kakano hub (wich is the yr 1/2s) at first we were going to do a wheel of fortune but then we decided we wanted to interact with the kids more so we decided we were going to do games and it was a sucess. We made the action plan to guide us on what we are going to do with the kids and what we would do as a reflection. In my group I had Caiomhe,Ariella,Snatara,Corinne,Amielia,Lily M,Zach K,Julian,Ethan.


Reflection:
For our final product our group we did games for kakano I think that they loved it because of all the fun games like rob the nest,capture the flag,ball elimination,dodge ball and heaps more.

How did our action build a sense of community in the school? We interacted with the kids alot and we also gave lollie pops out at the end wich I think they loved.

I contributed by helping with making the slide and helping my group since most of them are year fives

I think the PBL might impact on others by getting the kids to be fit and learn to like sport and get to know the little kids

What I learned about working with others was you don't always get your own way and that lots of people change the backrounds

PBL Market

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and  straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because we knew each other a bit better and we knew that we got M&M’s if we did it well.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was when we were at the market and we were sold out of slime in 2 minutes

Next time I would make the prices higher and make more because We ran out really fast and so less people would buy it.

Steam

Our driving question is How can we use a STEAM approach to make a marketable product.
 S We used science when we were making the slime because we had to put some ingredients together to see what would happen. T We used technology when we were search up how to do it.
E We used engineering when we kept trying again. A We used art when we were colouring it and making it creative. M We used Maths when we were measuring how much stuff to put in it.  In my group we are making glowing slime with glue, borax, glow in the dark paint and some scent.We are selling it at a school market to raise money for a charity. We are making all different colours  and sizes. We hope that we raise lots of money.

PBL

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas.Culture is…… Traditions that you might do that are different to others and where we are from.
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.
In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read….Maoi and the sun,Battle of the mountains and loads more I have written my own legend called/I retold the legend of Maoi and the sun in my own words.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organising the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection:
For our production I contributed by doing dance

I think the show might impact on others by knowing more about the battle of the mountains

What I learned about working with others was that you may not always get you own way but you need to just go with it.
